Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
  • Eggs, oil, and water (as per box instructions)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups (optional)
  • Flaky sea salt (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Prepare the cake batter according to the box instructions, adding the vanilla extract if using. Pour into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Let the cake cool in the pan on a cooling rack for 10 minutes.
  4. While the cake cools, make the peanut butter filling: In a medium bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, creamy peanut butter, and whole milk until smooth and pourable.
  5. Poke holes all over the cake using the handle of a wooden spoon or a chopstick, spacing them about 1 inch apart and poking all the way to the bottom.
  6. Pour the peanut butter filling evenly over the cake, using a spatula to help it flow into the holes. Let sit for 10-15 minutes to absorb.
  7. Make the chocolate ganache: Place chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Heat heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it just simmers. Pour hot cream over chocolate chips, let sit for 2 minutes, then add butter and whisk until smooth and glossy.
  8. Pour the ganache over the cake and spread evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups and flaky sea salt on top while ganache is still wet.
  9. Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours (overnight is best) before serving.

Notes

For best results, refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to meld. Use room temperature peanut butter for a smooth filling. To get clean slices, run a knife under hot water and wipe dry between cuts.
