A warm, baked cheese ball shaped like a football, loaded with cream cheese, cheddar, bacon, and nuts. Perfect for game day parties, this easy appetizer comes together in under an hour and disappears every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
  • 6 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 45 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup pecans or almonds, finely chopped
  • Chives or thin strips of red bell pepper for laces (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cook bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Drain on paper towels, then crumble.
  3. Toast chopped nuts in the same skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Set aside to cool.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, shredded Monterey Jack, crumbled bacon (reserve 1 tablespoon for garnish), sliced green onions (reserve some for garnish), garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  5. Beat with an electric hand mixer on medium speed until well combined and smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  6. Transfer cheese mixture onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Shape into a football shape (elongated oval with slightly pointed ends). Wrap tightly and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Spread toasted nuts on a plate. After chilling, unwrap the cheese ball and gently press nuts into the outside to coat evenly.
  8. Place coated football on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and slightly puffed. For extra golden color, broil for the last 2 minutes, watching closely.
  9. Remove from oven and immediately add football laces using chives or bell pepper strips. Sprinkle reserved bacon and green onions on top.
  10. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with crackers, sliced baguette, and fresh veggie sticks.

Notes

Don’t skip the chilling step—it helps the cheese ball hold its shape during baking. Use room temperature cream cheese for smooth mixing. Shred your own cheese for best melting. For a make-ahead option, prepare up to step 7 (chilling) a day ahead, then coat and bake the day of. For mini footballs, divide mixture into 6-8 portions and bake for 12-15 minutes.
