A quick and elegant appetizer featuring creamy goat cheese spread on toasted baguette slices, topped with fresh figs, honey, and crunchy candied walnuts. Perfect for entertaining and celebrating seasonal flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ripe fresh figs, sliced thinly
  • 6 ounces creamy goat cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 small French baguette, sliced into ½-inch thick pieces
  • 3 tablespoons raw or wildflower honey, plus extra for drizzling
  • ½ cup walnut halves, toasted and candied
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (optional, for garnish)
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, a pinch

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, toss ½ cup walnut halves with 3 tablespoons honey and 2 tablespoons brown sugar until evenly coated.
  2. Spread walnuts in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes, stirring halfway through, until golden and sticky. Let cool completely.
  3. Slice the baguette into ½-inch thick pieces. Brush each slice lightly with melted butter using a pastry brush.
  4. Arrange baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes until crisp and golden.
  5. Wash and dry figs, then slice thinly about ⅛-inch thick.
  6. Let goat cheese come to room temperature and whip lightly with a fork if desired for extra smoothness.
  7. Spread a generous layer of goat cheese on each toasted baguette slice.
  8. Top each crostini with 2-3 fig slices, sprinkle a few candied walnuts on top, then drizzle with extra honey.
  9. Finish with a pinch of freshly cracked black pepper and a small sprig of fresh thyme if using.
  10. Serve immediately for best texture contrast. If needed, keep toppings separate and assemble just before serving.

Notes

Let goat cheese soften to room temperature for easy spreading. Toast bread until crisp but not too hard to avoid shattering. Assemble crostini just before serving to prevent sogginess. Candied walnuts can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored airtight. For gluten-free, use almond flour bread or gluten-free baguette. For dairy-free, substitute goat cheese with cashew-based spread and honey with maple syrup or agave nectar.
