Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour, 1 ½ cups (190g)
  • Granulated sugar, ¾ cup (150g)
  • Unsalted butter, ½ cup (115g), softened
  • Large eggs, 2, at room temperature
  • Black sesame paste, ¼ cup (60g)
  • Whole milk, ½ cup (120ml)
  • Baking powder, 1 ½ teaspoons
  • Salt, ¼ teaspoon
  • Vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter, 1 cup (225g), softened (for icing)
  • Powdered sugar, 3 cups (360g)
  • Whole milk, 2-3 tablespoons (30-45ml) (for icing)
  • Vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon (for icing)
  • Black gel food coloring, 1-2 teaspoons
  • White gel food coloring, ½ teaspoon
  • Black sesame seeds, 1 tablespoon, toasted (for garnish)
  • Edible glitter or luster dust, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. Whisk the dry ingredients together: In a medium bowl, combine 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat ½ cup softened unsalted butter with ¾ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy (2-3 minutes on medium speed).
  4. Add the eggs and vanilla: Beat in 2 large eggs, one at a time, then add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  5. Mix in the black sesame paste: Add ¼ cup black sesame paste and beat until fully incorporated.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk: With mixer on low, add one-third of the flour mixture, then half of the ½ cup milk. Repeat with another third of flour, remaining milk, and finish with the last of the flour. Mix just until combined.
  7. Fill the cupcake liners: Divide the batter evenly among 12 liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Make the spiderweb icing: Beat 1 cup softened unsalted butter until smooth. Gradually add 3 cups powdered sugar, then 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons milk. Beat on medium-high for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy. Add more milk if needed.
  10. Color the icing: Divide icing into two-thirds (black) and one-third (white). Add 1-2 teaspoons black gel food coloring to the larger portion and ½ teaspoon white gel food coloring to the smaller portion. Transfer to separate piping bags.
  11. Ice the cupcakes: Pipe a generous swirl of black icing onto each cooled cupcake.
  12. Create the spiderwebs: Pipe 3-4 concentric circles of white icing on top of the black icing. Starting from the center, drag a toothpick outward through the circles, then from the outer edge back toward the center. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag.
  13. Finish with garnish: Sprinkle toasted black sesame seeds over the top. Optionally dust with edible glitter.

Notes

Room temperature ingredients are crucial for proper texture. Don’t overmix the batter. Black sesame paste can separate, so stir well before measuring. For the spiderweb pattern, use a light touch and clean the toothpick after each line. Cupcakes can be baked a day ahead and stored in an airtight container at room temperature; ice the day of serving.
