This small-batch spiced pear butter is made with just 2 pounds of pears and simple pantry spices. It’s a quick, no-canning-required recipe that yields a deeply aromatic, silky butter perfect for toast, yogurt, or gifting.

Ingredients

  • Pears (about 2 pounds, roughly 4-5 medium pears)
  • Granulated Sugar (1/2 cup, or 100g)
  • Fresh Lemon Juice (2 tablespoons, or 30ml)
  • Ground Cinnamon (1 teaspoon)
  • Ground Ginger (1/2 teaspoon)
  • Ground Cloves (1/4 teaspoon)
  • Vanilla Extract (1 teaspoon)
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Prep the Pears (10 minutes): Wash, peel, core, and chop pears into roughly 1-inch chunks. You should have about 4 to 5 cups.
  2. Combine Everything in the Pot (2 minutes): Add chopped pears, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt to a medium to large heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Stir to coat.
  3. Cook Down the Pears (25-30 minutes): Place pot over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low-medium and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until pears are completely soft and falling apart.
  4. Puree Until Smooth (5 minutes): Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Use an immersion blender to puree until smooth. If using a countertop blender, let cool 10 minutes first, then blend in batches.
  5. Thicken the Butter (15-20 minutes): Return pureed mixture to pot over low heat. Simmer gently, stirring frequently, for 15-20 minutes until it coats the back of a spoon and leaves a clean trail when you run your finger through it.
  6. Finish with Vanilla (1 minute): Stir in vanilla extract. Adjust spices or sweetness to taste.
  7. Cool and Store (30 minutes): Pour hot pear butter into clean jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Cool completely at room temperature (about 30 minutes) before refrigerating.

Notes

Don’t rush the simmer; low and slow prevents scorching. Stir frequently during the final thickening stage. The butter will thicken more as it cools. For a smoother texture, press through a fine-mesh strainer. This recipe doubles easily.
