This kid-approved turkey chili with sweet potato and black beans is a family-friendly weeknight dinner that comes together in about 45 minutes. The sweet potato melts into the broth, creating a silky texture that makes everyone go back for seconds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or avocado oil)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced (about 1 ½ cups)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ pounds ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 medium sweet potato, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes (about 2 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (15 ounces) fire-roasted diced tomatoes, with their juices
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for serving, optional)
  • Sour cream or plain Greek yogurt (for serving, optional)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for serving, optional)
  • Lime wedges (for serving, optional)
  • Tortilla chips or crusty bread (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until soft and translucent.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground turkey and break it apart with a spoon. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Add the diced sweet potato and red bell pepper. Stir to coat in the spice mixture and cook for 2 minutes.
  6. Pour in the fire-roasted tomatoes with their juices, then add the black beans and kidney beans. Stir until well combined.
  7. Add the chicken broth and bring the chili to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes.
  8. After 25 minutes, check the sweet potato cubes. They should be tender but not falling apart. If still firm, simmer uncovered for another 5 to 10 minutes.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt, cumin, or hot sauce as desired.
  10. Let the chili rest off the heat for 5 minutes before serving. Serve hot with desired toppings.

Notes

For best flavor, brown the turkey well and toast the spices. Chili tastes even better the next day. If too thick, add extra broth; if too thin, simmer uncovered. Adjust spice level for kids by using mild chili powder. Freezes well for up to 3 months.
