This cozy blood orange vampire sangria is the perfect Halloween drink—deep ruby red, spiced with cinnamon and star anise, and packed with tart blood oranges, apple, and pomegranate. It’s easy to make, crowd-pleasing, and sets the mood for a spooky yet cozy evening.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (e.g., Tempranillo or Garnacha)
  • 1 cup blood orange juice (freshly squeezed or high-quality bottled)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider (unsweetened or lightly sweetened)
  • 1/4 cup brandy or orange liqueur (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 3 blood oranges (2 sliced into rounds, 1 juiced)
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji, cut into thin wedges)
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate arils (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (plus extra for garnish)
  • 3 star anise pods
  • 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Ice cubes (optional, for serving)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish)
  • Edible glitter or dry ice (optional, for spooky effect)

Instructions

  1. Wash the blood oranges and apple thoroughly. Slice two of the blood oranges into thin rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. Cut the apple into thin wedges, removing the core but leaving the skin on. Juice the remaining blood orange into a small bowl, removing any seeds.
  2. In a large pitcher, pour the entire bottle of red wine, the freshly squeezed blood orange juice, and the apple cider. If using brandy or orange liqueur, add it now. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine.
  3. Add the honey or maple syrup and stir until fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness—remember the fruit will release more sweetness as it sits.
  4. Drop in the cinnamon sticks and star anise pods. If using a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise, scrape the seeds into the pitcher, and drop the pod in as well.
  5. Add the blood orange slices, apple wedges, and pomegranate arils. Use a wooden spoon to gently press down on the fruit to release some juices without mashing it.
  6. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight (24 hours is ideal).
  7. When ready to serve, stir gently. Fill glasses or mason jars halfway with the fruit mixture, then pour the sangria over the top. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig and an extra cinnamon stick. If using edible glitter, sprinkle a tiny pinch over each glass.

Notes

For best flavor, let the sangria steep overnight. If short on time, gently warm the sangria base (without fruit) over low heat for 5-10 minutes, then cool and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Don’t over-muddle the fruit to avoid a cloudy drink. Choose a wine you’d enjoy drinking on its own. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute red wine with concord grape juice or pomegranate-cranberry blend and omit brandy.
