Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small container (about 6 ounces) blackberries
  • 1 small can or jar (about 4 ounces) black olives, drained
  • 2025 dark crackers (such as dark rye, pumpernickel rounds, or charcoal crackers)
  • 4 ounces aged cheddar cheese, sliced into thin triangles or small cubes
  • 4 ounces salami or prosciutto, thinly sliced
  • 2 ounces dark chocolate pieces, broken into small chunks
  • 1 small bunch (about 4 ounces) grapes, cut into small clusters
  • 4 dried figs or dates, halved
  • 1012 small pretzel sticks
  • 2 small fresh rosemary sprigs

Instructions

  1. Prepare your board: Place your serving board on a clean, flat surface. If using a wooden board, wipe it with a damp cloth to remove dust. Visualize where the cat face will go—centered on the board with the body extending downward.
  2. Create the cat’s ears: Place two small clusters of blackberries at the top of the board, angled outward like cat ears. Use about 4-5 blackberries per ear. Leave a small gap between the ears for the top of the head.
  3. Form the head shape: Arrange dark crackers in a rough circle below the ears. Use about 8-10 crackers to create a round shape about 5 inches across. Overlap them slightly so they hold together visually.
  4. Build the body: Continue the cracker arrangement downward from the head, tapering slightly to form an oval body shape. Use the remaining dark crackers here. The body should be about 6-7 inches long and 4 inches wide at the widest point.
  5. Add the eyes: Place two blackberries in the upper portion of the cracker head, spaced about an inch apart. Press them gently into the crackers so they stay in place.
  6. Create the nose: Place one black olive in the center of the head, just below the eyes.
  7. Add the whiskers: Arrange pretzel sticks extending outward from the nose area. Place three on each side, angled slightly upward. The pretzel sticks should be about 2 inches long each.
  8. Fill in the cheese: Arrange the sliced cheddar cheese around the edges of the cat body, creating a border. Place the triangles with the points facing outward for a decorative effect. Use about 8-10 pieces.
  9. Add the salami rosettes: Fold each slice of salami into a small rose shape and place them around the board, interspersed with the cheese. Aim for 4-5 rosettes total.
  10. Scatter the remaining ingredients: Fill any empty spaces with the dark chocolate pieces, grape clusters, dried figs, and remaining blackberries. Keep the dark ingredients close to the cat shape to maintain the silhouette. Place lighter ingredients like cheese further out to create contrast.
  11. Finish with rosemary: Tuck the rosemary sprigs near the whiskers to create the illusion of whisker lines extending beyond the pretzels.
  12. Final check: Step back and look at your board. Adjust any ingredients that have shifted. Make sure the cat shape is clearly visible. Add a few extra crackers or berries if there are noticeable gaps.

Notes

Prep all ingredients before arranging. Keep blackberries for last to avoid squishing. Serve at room temperature for best flavor. The board looks better after about 30 minutes at room temperature. For a vegetarian version, replace salami with marinated artichoke hearts or roasted red peppers.
