A quick and flavorful Korean beef bowl recipe that comes together in under 20 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights. This savory-sweet dish features ground beef with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and toasted sesame oil served over steamed rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 grams) ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) soy sauce (naturally brewed recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 4 cups (960 ml) cooked white rice

Instructions

  1. Cook 4 cups (960 ml) of white rice according to package instructions (about 15-20 minutes).
  2. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup (60 ml) soy sauce, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil, and 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (if using). Stir until sugar dissolves.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 pound (450 grams) ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Reduce heat to medium. Stir in 3 minced garlic cloves and 1 teaspoon grated ginger. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef mixture. Stir to coat evenly. Simmer for 2-3 minutes to thicken the sauce.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Sprinkle sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds on top.
  7. Serve the savory Korean beef over warm steamed rice. Optional sides include kimchi, steamed broccoli, or a fried egg.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan when browning beef to ensure proper searing. Use fresh garlic and ginger for best flavor. Toast sesame seeds yourself for richer flavor. Adjust seasoning gradually to avoid over-salting. Simmer sauce on medium heat to prevent burning or drying out the beef. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat with a splash of water to maintain moisture.
